Do you love kids? I do but I know each of us is different. I have a dog friend that will get very mad if you come near his food and another that really doesn't feel good around kids. That's why my smallest brother and I want to share some safety tips for you to pass along to your people (especially the little ones).
Until you know how a dog will act, it's a good idea to keep these things in mind:
*always ask a grown up before you pet a dog. If they say it's ok, move slowly and let the dog smell your hand first.
*don't take toys away from dogs if they are playing with them. We might not want to share and may get mad.
*mommy dogs with babies can be very protective so be careful
*pet softly and please don't pull our ears or tails. And please don't ride on us like a horse - mommy had to stop my littlest brother from doing that the other day. Geesh
*if a dog comes up to you, STOP and be a tree. Stand very still, look at the ground and lock your hands in front of you or wrap your arms around yourself like you're giving yourself a hug. Most of us get bored with trees and after smelling you, will go away.
*Don't run from a dog. Almost every dog I know likes to chase and running makes us want to run after you.
* it's not a good idea to pet dogs when they are eating or chewing on toys.
* it's not always safe to take food away from a dog either. Mommy took my food away when I first came to live in my forever home. At first this made me mad, but she kept doing it until I understood that she was in charge. Now she lets my people brothers and sister feed me because that helps me to understand they are in charge too.
Please remember, make sure your little people understand that a pet is a living creature to be cared for and respected. Animals have needs and feelings, and we rely on you for companionship and loving care.
Love and Licks,
I'm Kona, a 2 year old Rottweiler. I love to run, play and give kisses....alot of licks means alot of kisses! Mom has worked at Stone House for almost 12 years and was just waiting for the perfect dog and I'M IT!! I also have a cat brother and 3 people siblings. I love them all (but the cat won't believe me!)
